Iron and Manganese in Well Water: Why Your Fixtures Stain and What Actually Fixes It
If you live on a private well and see orange-brown streaks in the toilet, rust rings in the tub, or black flecks on the aerator, you are almost certainly dealing with iron, manganese, or both. They are the two most common well water complaints in the United States, and they are also the two most commonly mistreated.
Where iron and manganese come from
Both are naturally occurring minerals in soil and bedrock. Groundwater dissolves them as it moves through aquifers, so wells in areas with iron-rich geology (much of the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast) pull them up with the water. Municipal utilities remove them before distribution; a private well owner has to do it at home.
The EPA lists both as secondary contaminants, meaning they are regulated for aesthetics rather than health. The secondary limits are 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Staining typically starts at those levels, and many wells run far higher.
How to tell which one you have
- Iron: orange, red, or brown stains on fixtures, laundry, and concrete. Water may run clear from the tap and turn rusty after sitting (dissolved ferrous iron) or come out cloudy and colored (oxidized ferric iron). Metallic taste.
- Manganese: black or dark brown stains, black slimy deposits in toilet tanks and aerators, dark residue in the dishwasher. Often appears alongside iron but stains darker.
- Iron bacteria: reddish slime, oily sheen on standing water, sometimes a swampy odor. A different problem that needs disinfection, not just filtration.
A certified lab test is the only way to know the actual concentrations, and the numbers matter because they determine which treatment can handle the load.
Why ordinary filters do not fix it
Sediment and carbon filters are designed for particles and chlorine. Dissolved iron and manganese pass straight through them as ions. Reverse osmosis will remove them at the kitchen tap, but an RO membrane fouls quickly when fed iron-rich water, and it does nothing for the shower, laundry, or water heater.
Iron and manganese have to be treated at the point of entry, before water reaches the rest of the house, using media designed to capture dissolved metals.
What actually works
Oxidation and filtration
The classic approach: oxidize the dissolved metal into a particle (with air, chlorine, or a catalytic media) and then filter it out. Effective for high iron loads but often requires two tanks, a chemical feed, or an air injection system.
Ion exchange
A standard water softener will remove modest amounts of dissolved iron and manganese along with hardness. It struggles above roughly 2 to 3 mg/L of iron and can foul if any of the iron is already oxidized.
Multi-media conditioning
Newer systems combine several media in one tank so that hardness, iron, manganese, and related issues are addressed together. A typical well water treatment sequence
- Spin-down pre-filter to catch sand and grit before it reaches anything else.
- Conditioning system for hardness, iron, and manganese.
- UV treatment for bacteria, since private wells are not chlorinated.
- Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water.
The order matters: iron must be removed before UV (iron coats the lamp sleeve and blocks the light) and before RO (iron destroys membranes).
Frequently asked questions
Is iron in well water dangerous? At typical well concentrations, no. Iron is an essential nutrient. The problems are staining, taste, and damage to plumbing and appliances.
Is manganese dangerous? The EPA has issued a health advisory for manganese above 0.3 mg/L over extended exposure, with particular caution for infants. If your test shows elevated manganese, treat it.
Will a whole-house carbon filter remove iron? No. Carbon removes chlorine, taste, and odor. It does not remove dissolved metals.
How often should I test? The CDC recommends testing private wells at least once a year for bacteria and nitrates, and any time you notice a change in color, taste, or odor.
