Bacteria in Well Water: What a Coliform Test Result Means and What to Do Next
Unlike municipal water, a private well is not chlorinated before it reaches your tap. Whatever lives in the aquifer or gets into the well casing comes straight into the house. That is why the CDC recommends testing private wells for bacteria at least once a year, and why a positive result needs a clear plan rather than panic.
The three results you might see
Total coliform: present
Coliforms are a large family of bacteria found in soil, vegetation, and the intestines of animals. Most are harmless. A positive total coliform result does not by itself mean your water will make you sick. It means the well is not sealed from surface influence: rain, runoff, insects, or shallow groundwater are getting in, and anything else in that water could get in too. It is an indicator, not a diagnosis.
E. coli: present
E. coli is a specific coliform that lives only in the gut of warm-blooded animals. A positive E. coli result means fecal contamination, from a septic system, livestock, wildlife, or a flooded wellhead. This is a health risk. Stop drinking the water until it is treated, boil it for drinking and cooking in the meantime, and address the source.
Iron bacteria or sulfur bacteria
These are not tested for in a standard coliform panel and are not a health threat. They show up as reddish or dark slime in the toilet tank, an oily sheen on standing water, or a swampy odor. They clog pumps and foul filters and are treated differently from coliforms.
First response to a positive coliform test
- Retest. Sampling errors are common. Use a certified lab, follow their collection instructions exactly, and confirm the result.
- Inspect the wellhead. A cracked cap, a missing vent screen, a casing that sits below grade or in a pit, or a nearby septic field are the usual culprits. Fixing the physical entry point matters more than any filter.
- Shock chlorinate. A one-time high-dose chlorine treatment of the well, pressure tank, and plumbing, followed by a flush and a retest after a week or two. Your state health department publishes the procedure. If the well retests clean, the problem was a one-off intrusion.
- If it keeps coming back, install continuous disinfection. Repeated positives mean the well has an ongoing pathway. Shocking it every few months is not a solution.
Continuous disinfection options
Ultraviolet (UV)
UV light at 254 nm scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts as water flows past the lamp, so they cannot reproduce. No chemicals, no change in taste, no byproducts. It is the standard choice for private wells and is what the AquaVerde UV30 does at the point of entry.
UV has two requirements. Water must be clear: sediment shadows microbes from the light, and iron or manganese coat the quartz sleeve and block it. That is why a sediment pre-filter and, if needed, iron treatment always go before the UV unit. And the lamp must be replaced annually; UV output drops well before the lamp visibly fails.
Chlorination
A chemical feed pump injects chlorine into the line, with a contact tank to give it time to work. Effective, provides residual protection in the plumbing, and also oxidizes iron and sulfur. Downsides: ongoing chemical handling, chlorine taste unless followed by carbon, and disinfection byproducts.
What does not disinfect
Sediment filters, carbon filters, softeners, and conditioners do not kill bacteria. A carbon filter can actually become a place for bacteria to grow. Reverse osmosis membranes physically block bacteria, but RO manufacturers require microbiologically safe feed water because a pinhole or a seal leak lets bacteria through with no warning. Disinfect the whole house first; use RO for the final polish at the tap.
A well water sequence that handles bacteria correctly
- Spin-down sediment filter
- Conditioning for hardness, iron, and manganese (if present)
- UV disinfection
- Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink
The order is not arbitrary. Every stage before the UV lamp exists partly to keep the water clear enough for the UV to work.
Frequently asked questions
My water tastes and looks fine. Can it still have bacteria? Yes. Coliforms and E. coli have no taste, color, or odor at the levels that matter.
How often should I test? At least yearly for total coliform and nitrate, and immediately after flooding, well repairs, or any change in taste, odor, or color.
Does boiling work? As a temporary measure for drinking and cooking, yes: a rolling boil for one minute kills bacteria, viruses, and cysts. It does nothing for chemical contaminants and is not practical for a whole household long term.
Does UV remove the bacteria from the water? No. It inactivates them so they cannot reproduce or infect. The inactivated cells remain in the water and are harmless.
Will a UV system handle a flooded well? Not on its own. Flood water carries heavy sediment and turbidity that block UV. Shock the well, wait for it to clear, then rely on UV.
